Don’t count the calories!

I had a long winded discussion with my doctor who told me to avoid counting calories, but instead just make better choices when it comes to food. Once you get the hang of it everything then falls into place. Has anyone done this before? How long does it take to get into the routine?

I really try to not count the calories each day but I will keep an eye on what I eat. I think the best way to stay on track is making sure that while you still have treats you can also eat using good (healthy) manners.

I don’t think you are going to really enjoy life if you are only counting the calories all of the time. Be sporadic and not count one day, I bet the day is more fun!

I have found that the easiest way for me to do the not-counting-calories way of eating has been to add better, healthier foods and keep adding more and more. If I eat those foods first, the less healthy foods get pushed out of my diet because I get full from the good foods.

I never count calories. I think it would be too stressful for me, and it would probably derail me from my diet rather than encourage me. Instead, I try to make better food choices. I let other factors such as how my clothes fit and how healthy I feel tell if I am on the right track.

I used to count calories religiously but I never had a lot of success with it. I could never find that magic number that worked for me. Either I was still eating too many calories and not losing weight or I was eating too few calories and felt hungry all the time.

I don’t count calories anymore, either. I used to but it just got too tedious. I would stress over exactly how many calories were in the food, exactly how much the food weighed, etc. Now I just focus on only eating when I’m hungry, not eating too fast, and stopping when I’m full.

I used to count calories by meal. I knew how many calories I needed to stay within over the whole day so then I divided the total up by 3 meals and aimed to stick within a certain range per meal. I didn’t write every little thing down or weigh everything, though.

I think for some people counting calories is a good way for them to see how much they’re really eating. I did it for a while to get portions under control, but now I know what I should be eating, so I don’t bother with it anymore.

Counting calories is tedious, but it can help people keep on track. It’s so easy to overeat without realizing it, even if those foods are healthy. Everyone has to find the method that works for them.
